Greek Finance Minister Varoufakis resigns

6 Ιουλ 2015

Finance Minister of Greece Yanis Varoufakis has resigned from his post following the historic referendum that voted against accepting creditors' terms for a bailout.

Varoufakis said, "Soon after the announcement of the referendum results, I was made aware of a certain preference by some Eurogroup participants, and assorted ‘partners’, for my… ‘absence’ from its meetings; an idea that the Prime Minister judged to be potentially helpful to him in reaching an agreement. For this reason I am leaving the Ministry of Finance today."
The minister alleged that many members of the Eurozone did not want to deal with him.  He said that it is imperative for Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to reach an agreement with the troika creditors including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Central Bank (ECB).
He said, "We of the Left know how to act collectively with no care for the privileges of office. I shall support fully Prime Minister Tsipras, the new Minister of Finance, and our government."
