Cameron to Push for Parliament Approval for Syria Airstrikes

18 Νοε 2015

Prime Minister David Cameron said he will spell out a comprehensive strategy “over the coming days” for extending British bombing raids on Islamic State to Syria from Iraq.

Cameron told lawmakers in the House of Commons on Tuesday that it’s his “firm conviction” that the Royal Air Force should join attacks on Syria. Cameron currently only has parliamentary approval for airstrikes on Iraq and has pledged to seek a vote in the House of Commons before attacking targets in Syria.
“My firm conviction is that we need to act against ISIL in Syria,” Cameron said, using another name for Islamic State. “We can’t expect others to carry the burdens and the risks of defending our country.”
Cameron said he will personally respond to a report published this month by the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee that said the risks of joining the U.S., France and other countries in bombing Syria would outweigh the benefits. The all-party panel asked seven questions, which the prime minister pledged to answer, and said there would need to be a “coherent international strategy” before it could back extending airstrikes.
